The World Cup in South Africa may have been another wasted opportunity for the England national football team, but the fans certainly didn’t let it get them down too much. During this month of festivities there was a significant increase in the sales of fancy dress wear.
A number of top online fancy dress retailers have reported that there has been so much demand for anything St George related and it served to prove that the country really was united in its support for the team.
Many fans up and down the country held fancy dress parties with England themes, while others dressed up to watch the key games of the tournament, while having a garden party or barbeque.
The supporters definitely put up a good showing, unlike the team, with those loyal fans that made it to South Africa donning their English fancy dress costumes. There were St George crusaders and British Bulldogs everywhere and they did the country proud, even when outnumbered by opposition fans.
The Telegraph even remarked that “the English fans increasingly resemble the crowd on a fancy-dress day out”, recognising their achievements in creating a great atmosphere out there.
Once again, fancy dress has become the focal point for many fans and those who like to have a good time whatever is happening out on the pitch. And that is a good job on the team’s current showing!
